A little history:
Goods from nearby plantations were shipped from the port town of Brunswick on the Cape Fear River during colonial times. Small settlements dotted the mainland and were home to traders, fishermen,and river pilots. Famous pirates like Edward Teach, who is better known as Blackbeard and Steade Bonnet sailed their pirate ships all throughout this area.
Then later, during the Civil War, forts and fortifications along the Cape Fear River allowed blockade runners to keep the Confederate supply lines open.
